Long Island SEO: The Essential Do's & Don'ts Of Keyword Research

By Paula Hess

One of the most important steps involved in any Long Island SEO process is keyword research. After all, if you're going to rank on search engines, you must focus on the best terms that will yield results. This level of research goes a long way, provided it's carried out well. There are both right and wrong ways to go about it. Keep the following do's and don'ts in mind so that you go about keyword research in the best way possible.

DO keep a local focus in mind. First and foremost, SEO strategies should be designed with local focuses in place. One of the reasons for this, according to names like fishbat.com, is that it can help even the smallest of brands rank quicker. For example, a bakery that's located in Miami want to hone in on terms like "bakeries in Florida." While this is just one example, it should give you a general view of what local SEO entails.

DON'T pay attention to terms with little volume. Some keywords gain more searches than others, meaning that your time should be spent wisely. As you conduct research on the matter, you'll find that certain keywords will only a few hundred searches per month. While this might seem worthwhile, the truth is that there are many other terms that dwarf this example. No one in the realm of Long Island SEO will be able to disagree with this.

DO recognize that some keywords are more seasonal than others. While this largely applies to ecommerce, this logic can be attributed to any company you can think of. Believe it or not, there are many keywords that fail to perform consistently year round. For example, SEO for resorts and hotels will see tremendous spikes during periods where most people are off of work. However, their traffic may be stagnant the rest of the time. Seasonal SEO affects businesses in a number of ways, but its presence must be noted.

DON'T be hasty when changing your SEO strategy. What many people don't realize about SEO is that it's a long-term process. It won't be until a few months after the aforementioned strategy kicks off that you'll start to see true results. What this means is that if you're thinking about changing things up from an SEO standpoint, you'd be wise to think again. Such a hasty move won't bode well for your rankings.
